Independence Day

The first Independence Day was celebrated in Philadelphia, July 4, 1777. Why July 4? That was the date on the Declaration of Independence. The celebration included bonfires and fireworks. I did not realize fireworks had such a long history with this celebration.

Here’s a shocker: July 4 was not officially declared a holiday until 1870, almost 100 years later.
